Description
Catfishes Systematics, Biology And Farming. By Sushil Kumar 1/e. 2020. Hardcover
Catfishes Systematics, Biology and Farming.
The name catfish refers to the long barbels, or felers, which are present about the mouth of the fish and resemble cat whiskers. All catfishes have at least one pair of barbels, on the upper jaw; they may also have a pair on the snout and additional pairs on the chin. Many catfishes possess spines in front of the dorsal and pectoral fins. These Spines may be associated with venom glands and can cause painful injuries to the unsuspecting. All catfishes are either naked or amoured with bony plates; none has scales. They form an Important group of fishes next to cyprinids in their abundance and diversity. Catfishes are valued for food and game. They have become popular due to their hardy nature and adaptability to thrive both in fresh and brackish water. The book is quite indispensable for catfish farmers, aquarists, students (both) graduate and post-graduate),teachers, planners, naturalists, and environmental scientists interested in the development of catfish farming in the country and elsewhere. Ä comprehensive phylogeny of species relationships of the Auchenipteridae is reconstructed herew ith a large scale taxon sampling based on combined morphological and molecular datasets. The b0ok has been adequately illustrated to facilitate the species identification and is supplemented by a comprehensive list of references and index of scientific names of catfishes.
